Having a Research MRI Scan

What is an MRI?

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is an imaging technique that provides detailed pictures of internal body structures using strong magnetic fields and radiofrequency energy, without using ionizing radiation.

How Safe is MRI?

MRI is considered very safe when proper precautions are followed. The magnetic field does not produce pain or cause long-term damage. Care is taken to prevent metallic objects from entering the MR magnet room, as they could pose a risk of injury.

Are You Required to Make Any Special Preparations?

Usually, no special preparations are required. However, you must remove all metallic items, such as watches and jewelry, and avoid wearing cosmetics that may contain metal. It's best to arrive early to allow time for preparation.

Can You Bring a Relative/Friend?

Yes, relatives or friends can accompany you, but they will not be allowed in the MRI scan room for safety reasons. There is a waiting area provided for them during the procedure.

Where to Find Us?

The Peter S. Allen MR Research Centre is located in the basement of the University Hospital, Walter MacKenzie Centre, area 0A6. The easiest access is via the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. Make your way to level 0 of the Hospital/WMC and follow directional signs to MR Research Centre.

Parking/Public transport

The most convenient parking option is the University Hospital visitor parkade on 83 Ave, which has a pedway connecting to the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. Free parking in the surrounding area is extremely limited. For public transit, several bus routes stop near the University Hospital, and the Health Sciences/Jubilee LRT station is just a short walk away.

Before the MRI

Before your MRI, you will fill out a screening form to ensure safety. You’ll need to change into hospital clothing and remove all personal items, such as jewelry and electronic devices, that could interfere with the scan.

What Happens During the MRI?

You’ll be made comfortable on the MRI table and moved into the scanner. Staff will be in a control room, able to communicate with you throughout the process. You will be given earplugs to reduce noise, and an emergency squeeze bulb will be provided in case you need the procedure stopped.

Will It Be Uncomfortable?

Aside from the noise from the MRI machine, the procedure should not be uncomfortable. Some people may feel claustrophobic, but if you’re concerned, inform the staff before the procedure.

How Long Will It Take?

The MRI procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the type of study. The researcher will inform you of the expected time.

Are There Any Side Effects from the MRI Scanning?

There are no known side effects, and you can return to your normal activities immediately, unless you've taken a calming medication.

When Will You Get the Results?

The MRI images are for research purposes only and will not be examined by a medical professional for diagnostic purposes. If any concerning findings arise, they will be followed up by the physician involved in the study.
